DRAW LIVE WITH

Mike Van Orden finished comic-art sketch
FIND IT. BUILD IT. FINISH IT. Take your sketch from first idea to final lines with lighting, line weight, shadows and rendering that bring the drawing to life.

Bring your pencils, paper or drawing tablet... and lots of coffee. Coffee optional. Drawing required.

YOU KNOW HOW TO DRAW. SO WHY DOES THE FINISHED SKETCH STILL FEEL... OFF?

You’ve watched tutorials, studied anatomy, saved references and practiced. But the pose can still feel stiff, the anatomy flat, or the finished piece somehow less dynamic than the image you imagined.

This intensive is about the missing process between the idea in your head and the final lines on the page.

THE POSE FEELS STIFF

You jump into anatomy before the gesture and composition have enough energy.

THE FIGURE FEELS FLAT

You know the muscles, but the forms are not being built convincingly in three dimensions.

DETAIL COMES TOO SOON

You start polishing before the underlying drawing has actually been solved.

THIS IS NOT ANOTHER POLISHED DEMO TO WATCH FROM THE SIDELINES.

YOU’LL LEARN THE DECISIONS BEHIND THE DRAWING.

See the scribbles, changes, erasing, corrections and redraws as they happen. You’ll learn what to look for, what isn’t working, what to change and why.

Then you’ll put the process to work on a character of your own.

This is interactive. You’ll be able to ask questions, participate during the live sessions, connect with the other artists, share your work, and continue the conversation inside the private CAM workshop community.

The goal is for you to understand how to solve the drawing, not simply copy somebody else’s final lines.

By the end of the intensive, you’ll have a clear process for pushing your own sketches further from the first idea to a stronger, more dimensional and finished comic-art piece.

ONE IDEA. ONE PROCESS. ONE WEEKEND.

FROM IMAGINATION TO FINAL SKETCH

We’ll build the process in stages so you always know what problem you’re solving next.

HERE’S YOUR WEEKEND

Here’s exactly how we’ll take your idea from the first sketch through the final piece.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1

ORIENTATION

Meet the group, test your setup, look inside the sketchbooks and process, and get ready for the weekend.

WIN: You know exactly how the weekend works and what to prepare.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2

CONCEPT & GESTURE

Imagine it. Explore it. Find the pose. Work through thumbnails, line of action, composition, silhouette, camera angle and energy.

WIN: A dynamic idea worth developing.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3

FORM & CONSTRUCTION

Build volume with simple forms, perspective, foreshortening, proportions, contours and anatomy layered over structure.

WIN: A figure that feels solid and three-dimensional.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4

LIGHT, RENDER & FINISH

Establish lighting, shadows, contours, line weight, selective anatomy, texture, rendering and final details.

WIN: Understand the full path to a finished sketch.

THE PROCESS YOU CAN REPEAT AFTER THE WEEKEND

The goal isn’t to memorize another collection of disconnected tips. It’s to understand what to think about, what to solve, and what comes next as a drawing develops.

FIND IT   →   BUILD IT   →   FINISH IT

Comic-art gesture, construction and final sketch progression

Learn how to build depth with light, shadow, line weight and rendering — so your forms feel solid, your focal points read clearly, and your drawings start to pop off the page.

THEN YOU MAKE IT YOURS.

Saturday night, choose a character and begin applying the process to your own sketch. Bring it Sunday as we move into lighting, rendering and finishing. Selected pieces may be used for live draw-overs and teaching examples.

THE 14-DAY LEVEL-UP CHALLENGE

After the live weekend, repeat the process independently with a fresh character or idea. This is where the workshop turns into a drawing process you can actually keep using.

QUESTIONS? HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW.

Do I need to be an advanced artist?

No. This is for aspiring comic artists who already draw and want a stronger process for developing dynamic comic-art sketches. You should be comfortable drawing along, but you do not need professional experience.

Can I work traditionally or digitally?

Yes. Use paper and pencil, an iPad, Wacom, or the drawing setup you already prefer. The principles and decision-making transfer across tools.

Do I need my camera on?

No. Camera participation is optional. You can participate by microphone, hand raise, chat, community posts, or simply draw along and watch.

Will the live sessions be recorded?

Yes. Session recordings and supporting workshop resources will be available to enrolled artists after the sessions.

Will Mike critique my artwork?

All enrolled artists can submit work for possible live draw-over or feedback during the intensive. Standard does not guarantee that every submitted piece receives an individual critique. VIP includes guaranteed personal project feedback during the follow-up Encore.

READY TO STOP GUESSING AND START BUILDING THE DRAWING?

Spend the weekend learning a repeatable process for moving from the first loose idea through gesture, construction, anatomy, lighting and rendering toward the final sketch.
